Synopsis of the Battle
Grant tried to get Vicksburg. They had a surprise attack. The North moved inward quickly pushing back the South. The North had victories at Champion Hill and Big Black Bridge, making the South weaker, causing the South to retreat to Vicksburg. Grant then laid siege of the city to prevent an increased loss of life, which lasted 47 days. The South's supplies quickly dwindled and as a result, Pemberton chose to surrender which caused the Union to have full control of the MIssissippi River.
Major Strategic Moves and Turning Point
Grant's strategy was to divert the South's attention from the site that the Union would use to cross the river.
During the battle, Grant used two operations :
1) A feint against Snyder's Bluff, Mississippi (a town North of Vicksburg)
2) A cavalry raid through Central Mississippi known as Grierson's Raid.
